Die Firma Hempel Werkzeugmaschinen wurde am 1. September 1990 als Vertretung der
DR. JOHANNES HEIDENHAIN GmbH für den Raum Westsachsen/Nordsachsen in Meerane gegründet. Am Anfang standen der Vertrieb und die Montage der von HEIDENHAIN produzierten Positionsanzeigen sowie Längen- und Winkelmessgeräte, später erweitert auf das komplette Produktprogramm von HEIDENHAIN einschließlich CNC-Steuerungen. Ab dem Jahr 1992 kam der Vertrieb von Werkzeugmaschinen und Zubehör für verschiedene namhafte und international agierende Hersteller hinzu.
Waren in den Anfangsjahren der Firma noch hauptsächlich neue Positionsanzeigen gefragt, kamen in der Folgezeit verstärkt Anfragen von Kunden nach Servicedienstleistungen an Werkzeugmaschinen auf. Die Firma Hempel Werkzeugmaschinen schuf sich daher auf diesem Sektor ein weiteres Standbein. Zur Reparatur von Längen- und Winkelmessgeräten kamen die Lösung von Steuerungsproblemen sowie die Modernisierung in die Jahre gekommener und den Anforderungen der Kunden nicht mehr gewachsener Werkzeugmaschinen hinzu.
Im Januar 2010 wurde die Hempel Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH gegründet. Alle Geschäftsfelder wurden vom Einzelunternehmen Hempel Werkzeugmaschinen auf die neue Firma übertragen.
